I have been involved with Australian Shepherds for 14 years now. It all started when I was a small girl. I use to show quarter horses and I would see all the ranchers with these great amazing dogs. They could do so much and help the rancher with their livestock. Back then, you would see all kinds of herding dogs, from Border Collies to Australian Cattle dogs. There was only one breed that really caught me eye. With their agility, loyalty, intelligence and devotion, I knew Australian Shepherds were a breed for me. At one of the horse shows, I went to, there was a rancher selling mixed Australian Shepherd & Border Collie puppies. I had to have one, so I brought him home and named him Tucker. I learned more about the breed by taking him to obedience and acting classes. He was always one of the tops of his class.
As time went on, I wanted to show conformation classes; but you needed a purebred to participate. So, as time went by, my mother fell in love with the breed and decided to get one of her own (purebred). I finally got to show conformation and learn more about the breed's standards, movement, grooming and how to handle your dog in the ring. I liked it so much I wanted my own purebred Aussie to show. I finally found one that caught my eye, with her personality (Shaker) and showy attitude, we had a blast. Aussie's are a great breed that has a special place in my heart. Each one has their own unique color, but all have great personalities.
In the past, between my mother's dogs, my dogs and friends of ours I use to show and handle a lot. But, due to becoming a single mother, working full time, and returning to school, It's become too difficult to show and handle dogs in the past.
As time went on I moved and relocated to Nevada myself and will be returning to the show ring. This time it will be with a different breed that I have been intrigued with since I was a small child, a Borzoi. I love all kinds of breeds of dogs and if I could I would have one of every breed. For my son Blake, he is old enough now to show and participate in dog shows. I got him involved in 4-H Jr. handling classes last year to see if he would like to work and show his dog. He enjoys working and playing with his dog Jedi a Smooth Fox Terrier and will be showing him and working agility with him to come.
